Every Monday they aired an episode which led to a total of 220 episodes! The show starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, but later on the characters were played by other actors. Many of the episodes were performed/recorded in front of a live audience. The episode that we are performing was first made by The Mercury Theatre on the Air on September 25, 1938. This episode is called The Immortal Sherlock Holmes.
Synopsis
We start the story at Two Twenty-One on Baker Street, with Sherlock and Watson. Their next case is the strange case of Professor Robert Moriarty. First, they need to get evidence - letters from Alice Faulkner. They move to the house in St. John's Wood, but the letters are hidden until Sherlock uncovers them. He wishes to take them, but lets Alice keep them.
We listen to a conversation between Moriarty and Bassick - they speak of a plan to kill Sherlock Holmes. Moriarty decides to visit Sherlock in an attempt to kill him, but fails.
Sherlock decides to go in the direction of Langham Place and gives the order to have no one follow him. Moriarty, Bassick, Craigin and his crew, and Mr. Larrabee await Sherlock´s arrival.
Alice is Sherlock´s only hope, and is the only one who can warn Sherlock of Moriarty´s plan. However, hope is running out when Alice is locked in a cabinet by Moriarty's goons. Soon after Holmes arrives, he is met with Mr. Larrabee and finds Alice in the cabinet. As he does this, Mr. Larrabee calls for Craigin's crew to come and get Holmes. Sherlock Holmes tricks them and gets away with Faulkner.
Back on Baker Street, in Dr. Watson´s office, Madge comes in pretending to be someone else. A carriage crashes, and Holmes is in disguise. Forman grabs Madge - she´s trapped and Moriarty has lost. Moriarty, in disguise as a cab man, is called upstairs by Holmes. Sherlock puts Moriarty in handcuffs and the Forman takes him away.
The case of Professor Robert Moriarty is now closed.
